Julia’s breakthrough

In November 2023, Julia’s mother found herself at a crossroads. Her 12-year-old daughter had been struggling in school for years, and it seemed like nothing was working. From the time Julia was in first grade, she had trouble keeping up with her peers. Extra help in small reading groups would provide some temporary relief, but soon, her classmates would surge ahead, leaving Julia behind once again. Her mother sought an evaluation from the school district, but when the pandemic hit, the process stalled, and nothing was ever resolved.

By the time Julia reached middle school, her academic challenges began to take a toll on her mental health. She became withdrawn, spending most of her time in her room and avoiding family outings. Depression and anxiety started to creep in, and her once-bright spirit was overshadowed by feelings of hopelessness. No matter how hard she tried, school remained a constant struggle, and Julia’s self-esteem was at an all-time low. Her mother, heartbroken and desperate to help, didn’t know where else to turn.

A confident teenage girl sits in a warm, well-lit learning space, working on her school assignments with a supportive educator nearby. The environment is filled with books, a whiteboard, and educational materials, reflecting a sense of encouragement and growth. With guidance from Gena Gear at Hearts and Minds of Napa, she is discovering her unique learning strengths and building the skills to succeed.

A Call for Help

That’s when she reached out to Gena Gear at Hearts and Minds of Napa. On the phone, she poured out her concerns, explaining that nothing seemed to work and she was running out of options. Gena listened compassionately and assured her that there was a path forward. The first step, she explained, was to gain a better understanding of how Julia’s brain learns.

A New Understanding

Julia underwent a comprehensive evaluation with Gena, designed to uncover how her brain processes information, how she best retains knowledge, and where she needs extra support. The results revealed that Julia was severely impacted by dyslexia and auditory memory challenges—factors that had gone unnoticed for years. With this new understanding, Gena worked with the family to advocate for Julia within the school district. Together, they secured an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) tailored to her needs. Gena also encouraged Julia’s parents to consult with a physician to address her anxiety and supported the family in finding counseling services.

The Turning Point

In addition to these efforts, Julia enrolled in Gena’s Brain Building: Skills for Smarter Learning workshop. In this program, she learned not only how memory works in general but also how her own memory functions. Through engaging exercises and practical strategies, Julia began to strengthen her memory skills and gain confidence in her ability to learn.

A Brighter Future

Fast forward to today, and Julia is thriving. Now, in 8th grade, she has received her report card with all A’s. She’s no longer the shy, withdrawn girl who doubted her abilities. Instead, Julia is confident, happy, and excited about her future. She talks about going to college with enthusiasm, a dream that once seemed out of reach.

Her mother reflects on the journey with gratitude: “I’m so happy to have found Gena! My daughter is so much more confident in her learning, and she doesn’t hate going to school anymore. Now she is talking about college!.”
