When parents witness their children struggling, the inability to help can feel overwhelming. Do you sense that something is not entirely as it should be? It can be hard to know what to do or how to help your child.
Caught in a cycle of frustration?
Without a clear understanding of the root causes, parents may find themselves resorting to strategies that yield little improvement, fueling everyone’s frustration and exacerbating the issues at hand.
The pivotal first step towards targeted support lies in a professional assessment, providing the necessary clarity and insight. Mental health challenges and neurological differences are more prevalent than ever before. Get the help that your child needs.
Professional assessment is the crucial first step
To properly support a child in overcoming their difficulties, a thorough understanding of what’s causing their issues is crucial. Children’s struggles can manifest in various ways and easily be misinterpreted, causing parents and educators endless exasperation when their best efforts to help the child prove ineffective.
A skilled neuropsychological assessment can help parents understand the real cause of their child’s issues, whether developmental, academic, behavioral, or interpersonal (or a combination). ADHD needs to be addressed differently from autism, which is treated differently from dyslexia and so on.
Expert assessment by a qualified professional can help parents understand. Then, they can focus their efforts on getting the practical help their children need.
Strategies that don’t address a child’s real needs don’t work
Parents don’t know why their child is struggling. All they know is that they need help. A common first step is to go to the pediatrician, sometimes this can be an appropriate first step. However, a specific behavior can occur for many reasons. For example, if a child appears distracted during English/Language Arts, one possibility is that they are struggling to focus due to an underlying diagnosis of ADHD. However, there are many reasons a child could appear distracted that have little to do with ADHD: learning disability such as dyslexia, language processing deficits, anxiety, sensory processing challenges, working memory difficulties and so on. When a parent comes to me for help to understand their child, the evaluation is comprehensive and thorough to distinguish not only what it is but, equally importantly, what it’s not. Often kids with ADHD present with memory deficits. It is possible to have both. It is also possible that memory is intact, but the inability to attend prevents information from getting encoded in the first place. My evaluations are designed to tease these nuances apart and provide a unique profile of your child to create targeted interventions specific to your child. It is difficult for parents to know what kind of evaluation they need, it is my job to sort that out. Parents can expect a personal experience that accurately identifies the strengths, illuminates underlying challenges that are often missed at the doctors office because they don’t have the experience and understanding of learning challenges. Additionally, schools complete evaluations as well, they don’t have the resources to do the in-depth kinds of assessments that I provide.
Often, well-intentioned parents and teachers misinterpret what their children need, and why they’re struggling academically or acting out. For example, learning difficulties can sometimes manifest in undesirable behaviors, as a child struggles to deal with his frustrations and doesn’t understand why school is so hard.
The parents may respond to behavioral outbursts without effectively addressing the cause of the frustration. This creates friction and discord when what their child needs is help with learning difficulties.
A skilled professional assessment can evaluate what’s going on and equip parents with effective solutions tailored to their child’s actual needs. Targeted help can address real needs more rapidly and more effectively.
Communication and collaboration with parents
Clear communication and collaboration with parents are part of the assessment process. Effective communication and transparency ensure the family’s comfort with the process, fostering a partnership that facilitates the child’s emotional well-being and social and academic success.
Whether a child is struggling with mental health, behavioral, or academic issues, a professional neuropsychological assessment can distinguish between complex diagnoses such as autism and other behavior-related challenges, comprehension difficulties, or learning issues like dyslexia.
