Skills for smarter learning

This learning and memory workshop is not your typical tutoring session. The focus is NOT helping to get caught up in homework. Rather, it is empowering your child with a deeper understanding of how the process of learning works. They gain a deeper understanding of their brain and use their personal strengths to work for them, as well as understand what strategies won’t work for them and avoid strategies that are less efficient. When fully committed, your child will actually grow neuronal networks in their brain to increase the amount they can remember and learn! It can be a life-changing investment where they can carry this personal awareness and strategies for remembering and learning with them for the rest of their lives.

The entire program consists of an assessment followed by Phases for learning and memory growth.

An abstract digital illustration symbolizing cognitive growth and learning strategies, inspired by the Smarter Skills Workshop at Hearts and Minds of Napa. The image features a stylized brain with glowing neural connections expanding outward, representing memory development and skill-building. Floating icons such as books, lightbulbs, and pathways highlight executive functioning and effective learning techniques. The vibrant colors convey energy, growth, and the potential for enhanced learning and memory retention.

Assessment

This is not a comprehensive evaluation, but it is highly specific to understanding your child’s ability to recall visual and auditory information, short-term memory, and long-term memory and perform tasks that require various memory and storage processes. The battery also includes either a review of a recent cognitive assessment (IQ test) or the administration of one.

  • 4-6 hours divided into 2 to 3 testing days
  • Fee: $1850

Phase I

Once an analysis has been completed regarding your child’s profile of areas of learning, strengths, and challenges, we can create an individualized plan to capitalize on those strengths. This is the bedrock of the workshop and consists of:

Metamemory – understanding their personal profile, how memory works, and how the brain actually stores information.

Learning strategies and, most importantly, why they work for their brain.

Initiate training on increasing neuronal pathways to physically increase memory capacity in their brains using an online program they can use at home.

  • Phase I- 10 sessions
  • Fee: $1000

Phase II

Now that there is a foundational understanding of memory, and more importantly, their personal memory profile, basic strategies, and the beginning of brain training, we learn how to incorporate real homework and actual material from their classes into the sessions. This is not a study session; it is a way to teach them how to study so that the information is “sticky” and they will remember it not just for the test but perhaps much longer. This phase will also provide access to brain training software and additional memory strategies.

  • Phase II- 6 sessions
  • Fee: $600

Phase III and beyond

This is a maintenance phase. Your child should have a solid understanding of how to study and how they learn best in class. This phase continues access to brain-building software, continued support in studying specific kinds of information, and adjustments in strategies to work for them. We also start to incorporate executive functioning skills and a deep dive into executive functioning as it impacts their learning and memory. It also ensures that the strategies are retained and continue to be utilized effectively. This is the mastery level. You can have as many Phase III sections as you want.

  • Phase III- 6 sessions
  • Fee: $500

This can be a game changer for your child if he or she is bright but just can’t seem to remember information well, particularly for tests. Confidence in their learning can reduce anxiety surrounding school and help them feel empowered. Brain building, just like going to the gym, requires consistency and dedication both from the child and the parents. Sessions are about 30-40 minutes, and the idea is to do shorter, more frequent sessions. They should occur at minimum once a week, and if possible, twice a week for the first Phase for the most effective outcome. Daily practice at home for short periods of no more than 15 minutes is also expected in order for neuronal growth to occur.

The assessment and Phases are priced individually and are expected on the first day of either testing or each phase of the Brain Building workshop. Credit cards, Venmo, and checks are appreciated.
